A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound by being hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration. The term usually applies to an object used in a rhythmic context or with musical intent. The word "percussion" has evolved from Latin terms: "percussio" (which translates as "to beat, strike" in the musical sense, rather than the violent action), and "percussus" (which is a noun meaning "a beating"). As a noun in contemporary English it is described in Wiktionary as "the collision of two bodies to produce a sound". The usage of the term is not unique to music but has application in medicine and weaponry, as in percussion cap, but all known and common uses of the word, "percussion", appear to share a similar lineage beginning with the original Latin: "percussus". In a musical context then, the term "percussion instruments" may have been coined originally to describe family of instruments including drums, rattles, metal plates, or wooden blocks which musicians would beat or strike (as in a collision) to produce sound. I curently play clarinet, so I've got some 'band experience', but I would like to play percussion in the marching band next year. I played piano for 6 years and my dad is a drummer, so I've got a few advantages that might help me. Besides that, what rudiments (etc.) do I need to know? I want to fit in with the other percussionists, lol. I would like to be in drum line. Asked by ; - Tue Jan 27 19:53:46 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Having band experience is very helpful. Most students who end up joining the drumline from another instrument will end up in the pit, especially if you are a proficient reader. Rhythm reading skills are important, but the majority of battery music is repeated and/or simpler rhythms that are quickly memorized and easy to get everyone to line up on. These rhythms are based off of your basic rudiments about 75% of the time. Many people make it into the battery because they have better music study and memorization skills than others. The most important aspect of drumline music is "chops" which is a nonsense word meaning the strength and speed of motion to play consistently and correctly in time. You need strong wrists and arms to excell at… [cont.] Answered by luminess - Wed Jan 28 21:59:20 2009 What is the Best School for a percussion major?
