Marching refers to the organized, uniformed, steady and rhythmic walking forward, usually associated with military troops. Marching is often performed to march music, and often associated with military parades. Marching is part of basic training in the military in most countries. In most cases, marching uses a system of drill commands. Learning to march by obeying commands is considered a form of discipline. While marching, individuals must maintain their dress, cover, interval, and distance (DCID):
In Northern Ireland marching is a major part of the culture, with hundreds of marches occurring annually. These are usually organized by groups such as the Orange Order, which provide most of the participants. Music is provided by marching bands including silver bands, flute bands and others. Marching is often seen as a symbol of control over a particular area, and marching is often seen as a sectarian activity. The Royal Marines refer to a long distance march carrying full kit as a Yomp. The most famous yomp of recent times was during the 1982 Falklands War. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I have been in marching band for four years, and i am sad to admit that i cannot join it ever again. (colleges don't have cool competitions.) but i want to help recruit people, because i know Marching band changed my LIFE. so, erm, why do you people think that we are losing members? i already have an idea, but i want to hear other people's opinions. oh, and if you are in the south, i know marching bands are flourishing there. this is more of a New England problem that i would like to fix. Asked by Nelle - Sun Nov 11 10:20:07 2007 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments A. i think that most people do not join marching band because they think it is a dorky thing to do. they do not realize how much work and sweat it takes to make the best show ever. they usually think that they are too cool to join a band with a bunch of people and make great music. which is sad. i have been in the marching band for 3 years and love it. i can't believe how little people really know about marching band. i think that if talented musicians really knew about what it takes to be in marching band and how much fun it is, they would probably join in a heart-beat. it is just getting past the idea that people have stereotyped it as "band fag-ish, and dorky". I just joined marching band, and I want to know if there are any websites i can go to, to listen to the music. not the freaking football games. Idiot. Asked by vlu.1993 - Thu Jun 14 21:26:25 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments A. Are you asking about recordings you can listen to over and over while looking at your sheet music? search the internet for different drum corps with downloads or "sounds". Star of Indiana has a lot. Also search for good university marching bands. James Madison University has a lot of the more common marching band standards and some more entertaining field shows. Also check out websites like Marching Band Planet and marching.com. Or are you asking about a variety of shows so you can learn by example from watching other bands? Depending on where you live, there may be Field Show competitions nearby. Try searching the internet for whatever is closest to you.
